      If it's technical work, there's a huge advantage to English purely due to momentum. English is a terrible language, but there's a massive advantage to doing anything technical in English because it's the lingua franca of technology.

      And this is where etymology is silly: "English is the lingua franca of technology": "English is the French language of technology". English will seriously hunt down any phrase it likes and steal it. At gunpoint.

      i'd just like to point out that lingua franca is, iirc, latin. so its a latin phrase that we use in english which originated in discussion of how french was becoming the language of the sciences. its a clusterfuck of centerpiece languages.

      That was old Europe in a nutshell. French took over from Latin. English took over from French. French has always had a special place in the Anglo Saxon world thanks to the Norman influence, so French was seemed to be upper class for many centuries.

      "Lingua franca" actually means "language of the *Franks*", not "language of the French". Modern-day France can trace its history back to the Franks, as can Germany, but the term refers to something that was a mix of like a dozen languages way back: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_Lingua_Franca …
