Hmm, the sensor failed during the rain earlier (but now it's back). Water ingress? The host was up, but no temperature readings, which means the BME280 was failing to acquire measurements but was otherwise up.pic.twitter.com/w276AnJddA
If it ain't broke, I'll fix it!

I'm guessing water entered the sensor opening. I need a radiation/weather shield anyway, so that should take care of both the sun and rain problems.
I should add a status metric to know what the actual error code was (e.g. failed I²C acks vs. error status vs. timeout).
It's raining again and yeah, looks like the BME280 is not acking I²C transactions. Probably water ingress. I'll print a shield for it tonight.pic.twitter.com/npmp5DF7Ka
Could it be humidity ingress too? When it stopped was at 90%
The sensor is specced up to 100%, but I don't think it likes actual liquid water. It seems to work again once it dries out though.
If the sensor dries, residual humidity will stuck inside package thus causing bad readings, one way to test is to create a close box enviroments and do reads with you box and another sensor
There's a hole in the package; whatever humidity is left inside will eventually evaporate either way. I'll cross check it with another sensor, but the readings I got yesterday indoors looked reasonable.
