I'm guessing water entered the sensor opening. I need a radiation/weather shield anyway, so that should take care of both the sun and rain problems.

Hmm, the sensor failed during the rain earlier (but now it's back). Water ingress? The host was up, but no temperature readings, which means the BME280 was failing to acquire measurements but was otherwise up.pic.twitter.com/w276AnJddA

I should add a status metric to know what the actual error code was (e.g. failed I²C acks vs. error status vs. timeout).
