I know a bit about pcie hardware and not much about software :( Is pcie actually involved here? IIRC for Optimus ACPI mostly takes care of the power up/shutdown and Linux doesn't see hotplugging or anything like that on the PCIe bus.

ugh thats what i figured but i know fuck-all about acpi and shit seems horribly opaque. last time i did this dive i lost days on fighting with this shit.

That's nvidia proprietary crap for you :( my life became a lot simpler when nouveau got good enough with supporting my card that I could completely eliminate the nvidia driver. Native Optimus with nouveau Just Works.

yeah but it doesnt seem to work for me and iirc last time i tried it i was presented with some wonderful nonsense so if i want to go down that road again its going to be a pain

It basically just depends on the card AFAIK. Maxwell and earlier, seems to work. Anything newer, you're SOL. Mine's a Maxwell, luckily (and wasn't supported for a long time).
