I'd measured it on an ESP32 (sans Arduino), in which turning the wifi on drew upwards of 80 mA. I don't know of a mode that takes lower current than that while keeping the radio on. Does ESP even support one?

Yup, am aware of the different types of sleeps and the ULP (in ESP32). What I wished to ask was is there a way in which I don't need to manually wake up the radio every so many ms, or a mode in which the radio is ON in some verylow pwr mode. I chose another uC to accomplish that.
You don't need to do that. The SDK takes care of negotiating with the access point and scheduling wakeups at exactly the right interval to make packet processing work. This is *standard* WiFi functionality. It's how your phone's WiFi chip saves power.
