recently I refactored some gateware and added a few features to it and it worked the very first time, now *that* was surprising

The weirdest one for me was writing a program in PIC16 assembler to emulate the Dallas 1-wire EEPROMs and building a circuit around it, complete with parasitic power, with no way to test it. I only had a scope trace of the original memory read as ref. It worked on the first try.
