This gets more interesting. Looking through SCSI/SAS controller drivers, I've found *6* that use eerily similar register interfaces. I didn't think they were all the same silicon, so what gives? drivers/scsi/ips.h has the clue. Turns out it's from the Intel i960 Rx.
The *i960 Rx* (which is what I said, not just i960) is an I/O accelerator. https://www.google.com/search?q=i960+rx … And the message passing hardware I just mentioned is exactly what that interface to the host side is.

The i960 Rx I/O Microprocessor looks to be quite a critter. It also included an i960 core. But I guess that doesn’t need to be used for the RAID aspects, just I/O. http://datasheets.chipdb.org/Intel/80960/manuals/27273602.PDF …
