Whenever I use tar -czvf and forget to make a new tarball and it calls me "cowardly" my first response is to scream internally "do you wanna fuckin' go" and Im honestly not even kidding. I'm going to fistfight a compression binary.

Doesn't it say something like "cowardly refusing to create an empty archive"? Like, it's calling itself cowardly.

No it's calling me cowardly for refusing to create the archive and I won't stand for it

I'm pretty sure it's calling itself cowardly. That's how I always read it. It's a coward, so it refuses to create an empty archive.

I mean this is no different from most software status messages, where there's an implied "I/I'm" (or "tar is" in this case, which is what 'tar:' means) in front. [I'm] starting services. [I'm] connecting to the server. [I'm/tar is] cowardly refusing to create an empty archive.
