Yes. I literally only use it on flights. The rest of the time it stays at home on trickle charge. I used it on a flight last week (and it lasted as expected), plugged it in when I arrived, and now I checked up on it and it's dead and refusing to charge.

Are there after market batteries for it?

They are all utter and complete shit. I've tried a few. I think only one company makes them and they just get rebranded. None seems to last more than a few months.

Same problem with my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet. I finally gave up on battery replacements and bought an ASUS Zenpad 8”. I use it for watching videos, browsing imgur, and checking the weather.
