One Bitcoin transaction uses as much energy as a single U.S. household consumes in three weeks. In total, Bitcoin now consumes about as much energy as Portugal. And it’s about to get much, much worse than that. https://buff.ly/2F8DZJz pic.twitter.com/K892GlXWi1

this is false. You cant calculate transactions of bitcoin like this. Is completely wrong and you expose yourself as a ridiculous tech site.

They probably mean "one block". Which is only went on a technicality. BTC's energy usage is a serious climate change issue!! It must be powered by blockchain verified renewables!!

one block is not one transaction. Bitcoin has use only a tiny amount of energy if you compare this to the energy that use data centers to secure the world digital banking system.

sorry to tell you this but every centralised banking system out there is more efficient than bitcoin because they have economies of scale whereas bitcoin is the opposite

They mean one transaction. Do the math. I did and it checks out. 300 kWh *per transaction*. Not per block. Per single transaction in the block. Yes, Bitcoin is *that* ridiculously inefficient.https://twitter.com/marcan42/status/953775357978591232 …

      Hector Martin @marcan42
Bitcoin consumes 4,000,000,000 W of power to process four transactions per second. A single Raspberry Pi with a database can do an order of magnitude more on 5W. Think about that next time you wonder if it's a good design.

And saying Bitcoin uses less energy than the world's digital banking systems is... an unsourced statement. Bitcoin is such a craze, and regular centralized systems so much more efficient, that I honestly would expect Bitcoin to consume more power overall these days.

it definitely consumes more energy than all the digital payment processing, cash and gold might be another matter

i am sure that only the ATM in USA(a tiny part of global energy banking system) use more power than bitcoin. You can easily calculate this....

Let's calculate this. 1000W for an ATM is a good overestimate (it's probably lower). There are about 500k ATMs in the US. That's 500MW. Bitcoin uses 4GW of power, 8 times as much as all ATMs in the US combined. See? Math isn't hard.
