devkitPro is nice for what it's built for, but it has a history of braindead patches and other stuff (e.g. some recent update totally destroyed HBC on real consoles by changing some core type definitions).
We've never used devkitPro for non-libogc development. E.g. BootMii and its PPC-side UI are built with vanilla GCC+binutils cross-compilers.

I mean admittedly I'm sure that's the case and it's probably good, but I'm not the best with compilers. Having prebuilt toolchain binaries is especially helpful considering certain restrictions on my environment for this project
