      To give an idea of the margin: at 135cm it sounds perfect, at 140cm I get the occasional dropout, and at 145cm it's unusable.

      I took a $0.65 red laser module and soldered it across the S/PDIF output. No driver. Nothing. It works. There is so much wrong with this I don't even know where to start.
