I took a $0.65 red laser module and soldered it across the S/PDIF output. No driver. Nothing. It works. There is so much wrong with this I don't even know where to start. This isn't supposed to work! 6MHz on a $0.65 laser pointer?! Thank you China for not adding decoupling caps.pic.twitter.com/oIn9CkQuSU

And it's a laser, so it easily works from across the apartment. This is ridiculous.pic.twitter.com/RTaNtFLry4

I took out some resistors to increase the power. Now it's bouncing off a mirror, 13 meters total. And it doesn't even need a lens. As long as the beam vaguely hits the receiver, it works. Amazing. If I want to test this further I'm going to need a bigger apartment...pic.twitter.com/PkFcsTdvZi

Get some audiophiles in the room and remake the famous "monster cables vs coat hanger wires" test but with this contraption.

Quite cool. But what exactly do you try to achieve?

Should even work on a way longer distance, Air has less absorption than fiberglass.

With better collimation on the TX side and a lens on the RX side, yes. The limiting factor is the quality of the diode and how big you make your lenses and beam. The wider the beam to start with, the less it will diverge.

Yeah but that requires somewhat fancier optics and terminations to work than S/PDIF ;)
