Not quite that linear, blocking half the lens with something like paper is actually letting through more than 50%. Still close enough on log axes but hey I need to be pedantic too sometimes
Paper is diffuse, there's no way whatever makes it through is getting focused onto the receiver :P But I was just guesstimating the 1/2 anyway.
