I seem to have a 3dB margin. I can block off half of the aperture before the audio cuts out.

Not quite that linear, blocking half the lens with something like paper is actually letting through more than 50%. Still close enough on log axes but hey I need to be pedantic too sometimes

Paper is diffuse, there's no way whatever makes it through is getting focused onto the receiver :P But I was just guesstimating the 1/2 anyway.
