Software patents are evil, but we're *stuck* with them, and as long as we are, I damn well hope Google patents as much video compression stuff as they possibly can, for the sake of open, royalty-free, advanced video compression algorithms. H.264/265 and their licensors can DIAF.
Would be nice if the @EFF started hiring patent lawyers for specifically this kind of thing. Would be nice to see nonprofits help us all fix the software patent system, too bad patenting is so freaking expensive.

The fact that it is presumably a good thing for us that Google patents a video codec, means that something is terribly wrong with patents.
