Put them on a reel of tape and just pogopin them to access. Should be able to get some decent throughput without much volume overhead by doing it a bunch of times in parallel.

I guess the lower price and higher speed of modern large HDDs is worth the tradeoff in shipping size and weight

The snowball is probably high throughput NVMe or SAS drives in some kind of redundant array, so probably better than SD cards. Would be super curious what the RAW storage in a snowball looks like.
