Apple: "You know what OSX doesn't need? Games. Like, any of them. Kill them all." Did some suit smoke one too many and think for a moment that their desktop platform has enough market share to pull off a Microsoft? It's not iOS FFS.https://twitter.com/11rcombs/status/1003725809184657408 …

There are cross platform APIs available which support Metal, OpenGL and Direct3D. Lack of OpenGL support is not an argument, at least technically. PS4 and XBox One also offer proprietary rendering APIs and guess what they have? Games, lots of them.

Guess what PS4 and Xbox One also have? Gamer markets, huge ones. Just because you *can* make games with cross-platform APIs doesn't mean everyone *wants to* or *does*. OpenGL was, until now, *the* cross-platform API. You could write a game for GL[ES] and run it everywhere.

Your argument was technical so you got a technical answer. If your point was about choice of non proprietary options then you should have made that point (which I agree with moreover).

My argument was never technical; if you thought it was you completely misunderstood it. My argument was market-driven. Nobody is going to decide to switch from OpenGL to some higher level (possibly proprietary) engine just to support future versions of OS X.

Plenty of studios will. Those who use Unreal Engine or Unity have literally nothing to do to support Metal.

Nobody is going to *switch*. Yes, those using commercial multi-backend engines don't have to care. I'm talking about everyone else.
