The temperature sensors seem to be ok. The error only shows up when I plug in the fans... Fans seem to be running ok, but maybe causing some other electrical issue. Error seems to be E-1 though, which indicates temperature sensor issue :-/pic.twitter.com/affKAZOm3N

Fans seem to run off the 10V rail, the AVR is on 5V. They pull about 115mA each (2 fans). At first I thought the 5V regulator was over-loaded, but now I’m not sure

Fans seem to be rated for 12V@200mA. The system has a 10V rail for those. Maybe whatever transistor is used to control the fans from the AVR is causing problems and pulling more than the AVR or the tiny 5V regulator can handlepic.twitter.com/k9jM2XyQA2

IC2 is the 5V regulator. Looks like they were planning to source more current and eventually went with a much smaller, cheaper partpic.twitter.com/iv431G7Fln

Forgot to mention that the 5V rail goes to ~4.6V with both fans on and ~4.8V with only one connected.

Looks like the 10V rail is also changing a bit. ~11.3V with no fans on, ~9.9V with one fan on. ~9.4V with both fans on. Doesn’t explain the 5V rail drop though

Alvaro vs. The Fridge Day 2: Looks like @Warren__Parsons is onto something. Brought out the big guns to look at the power supplies when the fans are on. The "10V" rail is a mess. One scope shot with and one without fans. Time to look at the caps after the rectifierpic.twitter.com/UFHoW2Hldv

Found the capacitor in question. It's a 1000uF 25V electrolytic. The closest I have is a 470uF 25V (I have some 1000uF and 3300uF, but only rated for 16V and with the swings on that rail I don't want to mess with it) The extra 470uF seems to have fixed the problem!pic.twitter.com/9vLTySbvUu

When your 1000uF capacitor seems to have <1uF of capacitance, you might have a problem! I think we have a mystery solved! Now I just need to get a proper replacement cap and then see if the fridge actually works :Dpic.twitter.com/lxhgjsdfQl

Bad caps. It's always bad caps. And when it isn't, the caps are bad anyway and just not causing a problem yet ;-)
