Oh hey I found a bug, let me file a bug report. Oh, it already exists. Opened 9 years ago. With 27 comments. And two dupes. *sigh* Here's a diagnosis of the problem. And here's a patch to fix it, because clearly if I don't nobody else will.https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/381677 …

This just strikes me as terribly inefficient. Surely in 9 years someone more qualified than me with actual familiarity with the codebase could've looked at the bug and fixed it, right? I mean I spent most of the time just learning about Inkscape's object model and Cairo.

"More qualified" is a concept that doesn't work in FOSS The only qualifications anyone *should* give a damn about in FOSS are, motivation, open mindedness, and willingness to learn. (with the notible exception of crypto work. If you're not a MSci of cryptography leave it alone)

This makes you at that moment in time the most qualified person for the job in the entire world. FOSS isn't about efficency it's about accessability.

I wasn't talking about on paper qualifications. I was talking about knowing the codebase. If someone else could do it in half the time because they know Inkscape, they're more qualified.

So am I. I still think that is irrelevant. "Knowing the codebase" is a limitation put in place by teams and roles in companies.

You are right, it's inefficient in terms of developer hours, but that is the wrong metric. FOSS is about spreading knowledge. You know have a better understanding of Cairo and how Inkscape works. While not immediately valuable, it is efficient in the metric of spreading skills.

Eh, I don't think I got much out of this in terms of knowledge. If I kept working on the codebase, sure, but right now it's such a small part it's rather useless and I'm sure I'll forget it.

Also, I think I already looked at the Inkscape codebase a few years ago and I didn't remember any of that, so... :-)
