OMG the pseudoscience is so pervasive. We are in a ship heading for the rocks in a storm, half the crew doesn’t believe in rocks, and those who see them think the solution is returning to old fashion swimming. Those who would use maps and GPS are vilified.

Plant breeding is pretty much based on this fact. Otherwise all farmers would grow the same variety. Also lots of ecological data at the phenotypic level, and there can be no doubt that they would find the PGS you seek if they had the money to sequence... 😏 Not controversial.

A v. interesting talk by Prof. Boetius, Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, at , on arctic change and the tipping points in the ocean ecosystem. It's vital to know how microorganisms affect climate change and how they are affected by it.

So I am to give a talk next week on "preprints and open peer review". Maybe recent events gave me some extra material, and maybe I need some new slides. And maybe I need to read a lot of stuff I hadn't planned to read about coronavirus.

Look where we were when "Modern warming discovered", where we are now, and be ... angry? afraid? sad? What is the right reaction at this point?

We're looking for a postdoc (or two) to join us to explore the molecular and genetic mechanisms that underlie the evolution of pregnancy in mammals and reptiles, and cancer resistance in vertebrates like 🐘🐳🦇🐍🐢🦎 If you're interested, DM me or email me!

Our work on genome-duplication-aware, synteny-guided gene trees is out as a preprint! Excellent work headed by ECR extraordinaire Elise Parey (and my first as senior author :) ) Some details in comments below!

Large primary productivity not only of sea water, but also previously underestimated sea ice and melting ponds on the ice.

Life forms clumps of little productive ecosystems on and under ice. Including long (several meters sometimes?) colonies of social diatoms (unicellular algae). We are losing not only habitats of polar bears and walruses, but also habitats of polar microbes.

Lack of scientific data on northern ecosystems: permanent stations were around the limit of permanent ice, which is shrinking by >100 km already. New expeditions are being conducted but we know little of the past of the Arctic microbiomes.

The next generation will know ice free summers in the Arctic. There is already less than 20% of multi year ice.

The Arctic changes so fast that the changes are visible within one person’s research project. Sampling stations which were on ice are in open sea.
