    As Mayor Turner put it today, Houston lost its “king of fine dining” with the death of Tony Vallone, the owner of Tony’s. I went to the restaurant in 2016 to ask him about one night in particular: the Saturday night in 1989 when Trump partied with Nixon.

    Fort Hood has the highest noncombat death rate among the 5 largest bases in the Army Forces Command, but just barely. This year, Fort Hood’s death rate is 7.3 per 10,000 people. Fort Campbell has 7.2, Fort Bragg has 6.1, Joint Base Lewis-McChord has 4.3 and Fort Bliss has 3.2.

    Fort Hood has seen 5 homicides this year. But based on Army data, the number of soldiers who die in noncombat homicides across the U.S. is staggering. From 2016 to 2020, 39 soldiers from 5 bases have been killed in homicides.
