Are you a disabled U.S. voter? Are you planning on voting in the Dem. primary? I’m a PhD student studying the political participation of people with disabilities & I’m looking for disabled U.S. voters to take a survey about the upcoming primary elections.

If you need context for why this still needs to be said see both: - Conversations happening about articles like this one below - The extensive discussion of whether ride-share drivers should be punished for discriminating against PWD

REMINDER: The ADA isn’t just a “nice idea”. It’s a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against disabled people. So when you call it’s (incredibly rare) enforcement “predatory” or “unfair” you’re siding in favor of the historical exclusion of PWD from society.

Ever since I’ve felt anxious and angry on march weekends. But I’m tired of feeling guilty for not fitting into an activism mold that is made for an abled body. If your idea of activism doesn’t include space for disabled activists then you’re a part of the problem. 4/4

After the first women’s march I felt like I had missed out on another thing I cared so much about because my body couldn’t handle it. This was reinforced by people who told me that by not being there I was complicit in the marginalization of women & that I should be ashamed. 3/

Fortunately many disabled activists are able to voice their support and participate in these types of events remotely online. Unfortunately this type of participation and support is often looked down on and belittled by those who don’t understand its importance. 2/

In honor of let’s talk about , , and . Many of the events prioritize accessibility, but no matter how much work goes into making marches accessible there will always be disabled folks who just can’t participate. 1/

This semester when you’re working with your disabled students on accommodations please remember this. You are in a position of power. Don’t abuse it.

Despite this being both disrespectful & illegal (FERPA) this has happened to me (and others) countless times. In the best of circumstances it’s made me feel uncomfortable & violated. The worst led to discrimination & harassment that prevented me from accessing my education.

Disabled students are required (to varying degrees) to disclose private medical information to professors in order to receive the accommodations they need. Professors often disclose that information to others without the consent of the student. This has to stop.

Here’s a (incomplete but almost always accurate) guide to whether or not you should donate: ✅ Is run by and employs people with disabilities. ❌ Is not run by PWD. ❌ Does not employ PWD. ❌ Uses inspiration porn/other exploitation of PWD in their marketing/materials.

Since is also in the U.S. I’m here to remind you that if you want to donate to charities to support disabled people you should be listening to disabled people about which charities you should be giving to. (And more importantly which you shouldn’t.)

Patients have the right to decide who can see their records/make choices for them for a reason. Taking away this right because you’re uncomfortable or unhappy with the choices they make is an abuse of power at it’s best and eugenics at it’s worst.

Because has proposed a mental health policy that guts HIPPA protections: Its time for your periodic reminder that any health policy that gives doctors the right to decide who accesses a patient’s medical information is a direct pathway to medical (& other) abuse.
