The flipside seems to be the numbers of people very angry with the FDA but with no suggestion of what their alternative was, the folks at Commentary (one example of many) I guess just thought the FDA should've kept mum. Imagine how that would've worked out when word got out!

isn't the alternative kind of obvious? Don't report on complications until they rise to a level above random chance, and don't delay (sure, go ahead and study) use of a treatment if the complications are radically less dangerous than the condition being treated. Do cost/benefit
