In Africa, it’s a body modification like other forms on the continent (piercing, marking, scarification, stretching) which involves African perceptions of how the human genitalia should look (for boys and girls). It has cultural meanings of power, strength and cleanliness.

It’s practiced in 28 countries within Africa, and the Middle East and Asia. We couldn’t possibly give you specific reasons it’s practiced because there are multiple reasons: as a body modification, for cultural obligation, cultural pride, feminine power/pride, cleanliness, etc.

There are 3 main types of female circumcision. Types 1-2 involve altering part or all of the clitoris and/or labia minora. Type 3 is stitching of the labia majora. Type 4 is ambiguous. Each type is different with unique results. Women typically have 1 type in their lifetime.
