A few VERY angry people have tried calling me out on my Shinobi sound comparison vs MAME. They say System 16B sounds better than 16A. This is very true. However MAME's emulation of 16B does not account for the low pass filer on the real hardware, and still sounds worse. Watch...pic.twitter.com/3UMJtNgQUV

Not all low-pass filters are identical! We want to add the filter specific to the System 16B variation. Providing sound samples from a working PCB isn't enough! Accurate schematics of the PCB and of the filter specifically are needed.

Since published schematics are often accurate, we'd also need close-up scans or photos of the PCB detailed enough to follow the traces and read component markings. And sometimes if the markings are old and gross, we need to probe the resistor values even!

I've been working on a project that might help in this area http://junkerhq.net/MDFourier/ It is not limited to game consoles, I'm slowly adding new platforms.. But my intention is to eventually cover arcade PCBs via custom code to generate the test patterns and analyze them.

Hi MAME team! I’d love to help in any way I could but I’m not sure what I can do here on a personal level. Agree that not all LPFs are the same and I’m not sure where the rolloff on my particular board revision begins or how it ramps.

I like how Game Sack's complaints turned this thread into something very knowledgeable for both sides.

having a civil discussions on twitter is so underrated these days.
