This is, of course, an April Fool's Day joke! Instead of this happening, we instead released MAME 0.242 today!

After many fruitful years, we’ve come to realise MAME has achieved everything it can. The project is now in maintenance mode, and there will be no new functionality or regular releases.

Today is a bittersweet day. After a quarter of a century, we’ve decided that it’s no longer in our best interests to distribute MAME as Open Source/Free Software. That's right, we're going commercial!

At any rate, we don't recommend using that 10th anniversary build because you'd be missing 15 years of improvements in MAME!

You could probably approximate this roughly in 2022 by doing a SOURCES= build, instructions here: It definitely wouldn't be as slim and trim as that 10th anniversary release without some major rework though!

We did just that for the 10th anniversary in 2007: We provided, for laughs, a tiny build of MAME for Windows (and Linux and macOS) from 2007 (based on MAME 0.112) with just those games! You would need to compile it yourself though.

Someone asked "how to run MAME 0.1 today?" In an emulator, of course! Or a virtual machine of your choice. You can even run MAME within MAME (in many different ways!) But if you just want to limit MAME to a small number of games like MAME 0.1, you can always do a custom build!

For the curious, you can find MAME 0.1 (only for use in MS-DOS and Windows 95/98 command prompts, and we no longer provide support) at the bottom of our Previous Releases page here: and the release documentation is here:

Happy 25th anniversary, MAME! On December 24, 1996, developer Nicola Salmoria began working on single arcade hardware emulators such as MultiPac. Nicola merged his emulators together under a single unified framework and on February 5th 1997, he released MAME 0.1.
