I’m interested in why some bands, albums, video games, etc. spawn their own (sun)genre while other equally novel media fail to achieve even a single worthy imitator.

Metallica’s early albums, despite their huge popularity, did not actually spawn many true imitators. Thrash, as a genre shares much more in common with Slayer and Exodus.
