In the chan and song era Zen lit you often find rinzai masters like Yunmen entering the meditation hall and saying things like "what a bunch of fools!" Etc. Joshu-Rinzai is the school I'm from, which is itself small and not the same as main line rinzai.
I read Buddha is the Centre of Gravity a while ago which is by Joshu Sasaki, I have insufficient experience to compare the two sides really, people from both traditions seem to report genuine progress though
Yeah there's certainly value all around. American Soto has a strain of culty stuff and is largely very sick from the cultural leftovers of the beatniks.

Yeah, I think you could approach politics with that awareness and it would imply something like a pragmatic rather than idealistic approach... but I'll probably never get round to working this through
Some people however, do attain satori from intense meditation so ofc it's not without value. But for someone with my composition I had to be abused by the koan process for a decade before it sunk in haha
