just walking thru this on first principles; if they were repeat offenders it’s because they committed a crime during the earlier, more punitive approach. if that’s the case, then is it fair to say that prison isn’t acting as a deterrent? again, SF afaik is technically safer rn

There’s all sorts of examples to draw on, including repeat offenders whose priors should be disregarded for reasons you alluded to. Also cases where it’s clear the system isn’t working (eg https://twitter.com/sfpdtenderloin/status/1340877753743118338 …) Details matter, and it’s fair to scrutinize every system failure

SFPD TenderloinVerified account @SFPDTenderloinTonight, for the fifteenth (15th) time in 18 months, and the 3rd time in 20 days, we are booking the same suspect at county jail for felony motor vehicle theft. This motorcycle, stolen yesterday, recovered by TL cops and returned to its very grateful owner tonight. right to be clear the proposal here is that more people should go to jail because property crimes have gone up, right? that’s what’s at stake

I’d say that person who keeps stealing cars from above tweet needs to go to jail.

Anecdotally, I’m not seeing much opposition to CJ reform locally, maybe some knee jerk “is this progressive DA gonna be another
@chesaboudin”. (Guilty of it myself). That’s why this occurred to me:https://twitter.com/maksim_ioffe/status/1352774570227322886 …Maksim Ioffe added,

It's possible that@chesaboudin's legacy will be that voters will assume criminal justice reform cannot be done without undermining public safety. DA candidates running on better criminal justice reform platforms will be compared to him for years to come.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
Btw, in the US, various forms of criminal justice reform have bipartisan support. Even Trump supported and signed into law a significant overhaulhttps://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2018/12/18/18140973/state-of-the-union-trump-first-step-act-criminal-justice-reform …

Anecdotally, it is, and it’s what’s driving the backlash. Hard to compare pre and post covid numbers, because of lack of tourists and other effects of lockdowns. If you’re a local, many people report feeling much less safe. Add to this
@SFDAOffice stonewalling of info requestshttps://twitter.com/TheMarinaTimes/status/1352387553941307393 …Maksim Ioffe added,
The Marina Times @TheMarinaTimesHey @EskSF and @timredmondsf can you help me get records from @chesaboudin @RachelRMarshall @SFDAOffice? They’re happy to give you anything you want, but no matter how detailed a request I send they’re non responsive. @dennisherrera pic.twitter.com/PRlszVXPrR1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
i know a few people in SF, who i’ve asked about this, and i’ve looked up the stats. i don’t mean to take away from how scary it is to have someone break into your garage, but just seems weird to see so many rich people push against CJ reform

I agree the optics around this can be weird. But even rich people deserve safety. Also, I haven’t seen people opposed to well thought out and executed reform, just opposed to @chesaboudin
