A short story about a commonly theorised future era in which there are no major fires burning, where we have time to think, and nap, and think more effectively for having had the nap. Some of us call it "The Long Reflection". Bringing it about would not be a terrible plan.

IMO a very interesting work, building a world that gives its inhabitants much more permission to sleep than ours

The biggest lie psychiatry ever told is that normality is sane. This is falsified by social psychology.

OTOH when a theoretician denies the validity of a folk concept that they could instead, with a little effort, formalise, doesn't that usually turn out to be an asshole move.

It feels as if they're denying that the sky is blue, but really they'd agree with almost all of your measurements and predictions, they are promoting a more precise way of thinking about the radiance of the sky which you wont apprehend until you learn some math or something

seems to be saying "group selection is not a useful concept if you already know the low-level precises (I don't so I'm not sure what they're called)" I sense that a lot of framework disagreements are like this.

Was about to have a rant about how sexual reproduction blatantly benefits collective more than individual and therefore group selection is extremely darned true, but it dawns on me that the the opposition to group selection isn't really saying "that thing doesn't happen",

I'd say this is the most effective entry from issue 1. If you ever like to sleep, read it.

I want to train in ethos until I can conclusively determine whether or not a universe consisting entirely of one pebble is more beautiful than a universe consisting entirely of one fleck of ice, and then convince others of my conclusion by singing about aesthetics

Read the first issue of Zs here: Zs publishes works of Somnotica – an experimental literary genre coveting sleep. In our first issue, we feature works from seven authors, each approaching sleep from a unique angle. RTs appreciated!

I can't stop thinking about this toilet door grafitti I saw in the philosophy department. "I shit, therefore I am." A succinct proof, accessible at least during the direct experience of shitting, that our simulation probably has a certain level of detail and accuracy.
