WHY is magic dealing with death supposed to be inherently evil? Usually it’s depicted as ghoulish or brutal but it wouldn’t have to be, it’s just written that way. In theory “piercing the veil” could just as easily be amazing and good

Communing with passed loved ones and ancestors, resurrection, allowing spirits to revisit restored bodies as they please, easy murder investigations, etc

I profoundly oppose the notion that if it has do with the dark and mysterious it must be bad, which is what usually seems at work with this “piercing the veil” idea

One could argue that it’s to do with using magic to intellectually take control of a natural process (death), but that supposes a certain presentation of magic—as technological, scientific, nature-dominating. That doesn’t have to be the case either

See also “blood magic is the evil magic.” Okay, why? Like it it’s parasitic and predatory, sure. But often this trope is just as much about magicians using their own blood as a medium. Why’s that inherently bad?

Why are these kinds of magic seen as inherently bad but magic that can alter weather patterns for miles, rain down destruction, etc, tends to be seen as neutral or “natural”?

Honestly I don’t think it was always fully conscious but I can see myself pushing against this trope pretty hard in Lord of the Last Heartbeat. Every good character has something (positive) to do with ghosts, the dead, resurrection, speaking to the dead, etc.

Most readers don’t want to see a character they care about fail. Making them suffer is a given but to just shit all over them and give them no reprieve by the end can be annoying. It’s not fun to read about a character who’s constantly losing.

Romances about 70% of the time bother me. There's plenty of 0 chemistry, of course, but other times people just dive into intimate relationships without any thought of consequence or dating period or anything. Plus the constant heternormativity

Good news! There’s a ton of excellent romance and queer romance specifically! I frequently retweet novel recs and releases, you might give them a try
