I’m an outbreak epidemiologist. Much like 2020, I spent 2021 responding to COVID. But I also met a creative milestone: In 2021, I wrote my first novelβ€”about a lady plague doctor in 17th century Mughal India. (High-stakes science meets court intrigue & romance!) THREAD 1/

I felt compelled to paint a plague mask over the weekend, so here's a (very preliminary) glimpse of my latest artwork-in-progress. Software: @AdobeDrawing's #AdobeFresco Brushes: Oilpaint Short (Live)

Two important new papers on women in science: 1. Big meta analysis: no evidence of discrimination against women in hiring and promotions. Fantastic! 2. Combining career and family is the major issue. Women with kids are half as likely to get tenure as women with out. Thread:

β€œWomen and men are just as likely to be promoted, controlling for publications” But listen, a survey of 50,000 US scientists finds that motherhood inhibits output. So controlling for publications omits a major gendered obstacle to career progression. By @PMoserEcon et al

my ex (we're still friends) is a criminal defense lawyer and until february '23, masks were required in the county courtrooms. now masks are optional, judges and DAs don't wear them, and he's doing a trial maskless because it will give his client a better chance of avoiding jail

This quote sums it up for me: β€œSomething clearly went wrong. And I don’t know exactly what it was. But the reason we know it went wrong is that we are the richest country in the world, and on a per-capita basis we’ve done worse than virtually all other countries.”

A Q I've seen: "How did this stay quiet so long?" Quote from the article: "Many sources who spoke to Science declined to be named out of fear of legal action from Bogner or of losing GISAID access." Scientists depend on GISAID access. Fear is powerful.

β€œ[H]ospitals cannot necessarily avoid liability by arguing that patients consent to unmasked care. Many patients cannot voluntarily consent to this…. Moreover… courts have generally rejected the argument that patients can consent to medical malpractice.”

A team of data analysts has found the presence of Black primary care docs in a county, even a single one, means Black residents in that county live longer. Even veteran researchers call the finding stunning

Deaths from pregnancy increased 40% in 2021 compared to 2020, our first full year of both COVID and vaccines. Yet this high-risk group died at a rate we've haven't seen in recent history. If COVID is gonna remain with us, we have to figure out how to keep birthing people alive.

Grateful to my coauthor @Theresa_Chapple, the Hill for publishing this, and our colleagues who gave us such amazing feedback. We will not restore Black autonomy and joy without keeping Black birthing people and babies safe. thehill.com/opinion/health

For male academics (who are 4x more likely to have a partner at home doing domestic care), the start of the COVID pandemic was a publishing boon. Of the 45 most prolific medical journal authors (60+ papers) during the 1st 18 months, just 5 were women.

My friend just published this brilliant piece in about the unspoken fear that is driving many docs, nurses, & other #healthcare providers out of clinical care. It’s not what you think. Take a read.

Health workers have been applauded as pandemic heroes. But they've faced longer hours, greater risks and more challenging work than ever β€” plus the massive additional burdens in family care borne by women around the world. My latest for :
