We've updated our transmissibility assessment for ! R_0 estimates (based off of publicly reported confirmed cases through 1/26/20 & subject to change) remain ~stable, now ranging from 2.0 to 3.1. Pre-print will be updated soon: See thread below.

Patients have been arriving at a 1,000-bed hospital in Wuhan, built in just 10 days by a 7,000-member crew. It is part of China's intensive efforts to fight a new virus. The hospital is staffed by 1,400 doctors, nurses and other personnel.

Scientific paper: travel restrictions failed to stop the spread of H1N1. Look, I get it. Travel bans seem like an intuitive way to halt spread. But all the evidence from similar epidemics shows that the benefits are minimal and the risks are enormous.

I've gotten a lot of questions about how bad this outbreak might get if it ends up in the US. And we just don't know, and I don't find it super helpful to speculate. At the same time, I know there's lots of anxiety. So here's what helps me: a thread. /1

Interesting take on the first death case outside of China.

  8. NOTE: It looks like the has issued a correction about this case’s influenza co-infection. Instead of bacterial influenza type b as they originally reported, the case was co-infected with *viral* influenza b.

This interest in mathematical epidemiology is what made me follow and in the first place. Also, I know math and I love it. I do qualitative work because it answers the questions I like asking, not because I can’t do regressions or multilevel models.

  11. This case was also co-infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae & Haemophilus influenza type b, so deducing a precise cause of death may be challenging. Data across cases on both chronic *and* acute concurrent conditions will be critical for mortality risk factor analysis.

  12. To those following me for -related science: though I’m doing my best to respond to mentions & media requests, my notifications (& inbox) are saturated... And for me, conducting the actual research right now takes precedence. 🔍 Kindness & understanding are appreciated!

Thank you for this exceptionally clear explanation of these different ways of quantifying the "deadliness" of diseases including . I've added it to my updates on this outbreak:

  15. ICYMI, I wrote up a short explainer on population mortality, case fatality, and the proportion of fatal cases associated with so far. It’s important to note that early in an outbreak, dividing deaths by total cases isn’t necessarily an accurate measure of lethality.

  16. Chatted with Adam (for ) about the responsibility scientists have when sharing preprints to platforms like Twitter, especially during crises like the ongoing outbreak. Transparency and audience-minded explainers are key. Seems highly relevant now, especially.

Top emergency official tells it's not too late to contain -- virus might not be spreading as efficiently as feared, he says, and asymptomatic spread is not a big contributor via

Australia's proposed quarantine of people traveling from Wuhan on Christmas Island is likely illegitimate under a number of pieces of international law.

  20. If US citizens are being “granted quarantine”, why not folks on student visas too (for example)? Are there exceptions to this rule? If not, this may affect a substantial portion of the student body (at least). Spring semester starts soon & students are flying back to school.

  21. If the goal is to reduce the likelihood of importations (and thus, any potential subsequent transmissions on US soil), it seems senseless to deny entry *only* to non-US citizens who are traveling to the US from China. ...Not that this is a reasonable choice either way.
