People who have no principles & don't care about either democracy or other human beings will always have a political advantage. I feel like this is fairly obvious, but perhaps doesn't get incorporated enough into our discussions re: political "negotiations" (e.g. the shutdown)

So we have a situation where people who don't actually care about the government or quality of life for American citizens have an advantage. A potential counter-effect *could* be political accountability, but the media somewhat mitigates this effect by equalizing the narrative.

If we had a vastly better informed public, for the record, these advantages would be diminished. And I'm not blaming the public here, but rather those who provide the public w/ information.
