A reminder that black girls are seen as older and less innocent than white girls. Which is basically what that juror just said. “The way they talk, the way they dress. I just didn’t believe them.”

some of the responses to this are like, "aren't there more important things to worry about?" recognizing human rights is pretty freaking important.

I think both my cats have mild colds, but they're both indoor and don't come into contact w/ other animals. Is this normal for indoor cats?

No one claimed that. All I said was that you were incorrect to assert that a woman came by her popularity via fraud, rather than through hard work & having a great mind. That you would see this any differently reveals a lot about who you are.

That is more damaging to us than it is for the rare occasions when the media asks Republicans to "account" for Trump. The racial, cultural politics aren't the same when it's Ryan or McConnell.

More often than not it's WOC who have "stepped out of line." It's not surprising since they're the most personally targeted by Trump. But the media seems to delight in asking white Dem leaders to "account" for us.

Yeah, I mentioned this in my Wonkette piece. She said the word "once" and not only has the media let the GOP frame it as a David Mamet monologue, they've ran with that narrative.

You can, , when you understand the interest of most of the press isn’t in the content of the comment or its implications but rather in the spectacle being generated.

Why would you want to talk to a press that you know will misrepresent you? Y'all should do a better job at ensuring a woman's actual intent & words will be communicated in your reporting.

This is awful. So is the mother's response: she won't stop writing about her daughter, because "I’m not done exploring my motherhood in my writing." And "Promising not to write about her anymore would mean shutting down a vital part of myself." She's your child. It's her life.

Also noteworthy that so many left out the fact that Tlaib's comments were about teaching her son about holding bullies accountable. . . . .

In this case, the media claimed/insinuated the following re: Tlaib's comments: -rant/tirade -multiple instances of profanity -that she gave an imperative ("Impeach the motherfucker!"), rather than stating a future action ("We're going to impeach the motherfucker.")

Yeah, it's totally clear this coverage has been sexist and racist. Media feels comfortable & even compelled to misrepresent speech of women & POC. Common misrepresentations include: more anger, less control, aggressiveness, hysteria, etc. etc.

I think the media largely fucked up this story. And I think they felt like they had either more leeway or more impetus to do so b/c Tlaib is a WOC.

Also, , you've reported Tlaib said, "Impeach the motherfucker!" when, actually, she said, "We're going to impeach the motherfucker!" Some might accuse me of nitpicking here, but this is actually a really important distinction, esp. when talking about government processes.

Alright, I'm getting the impression that other folks have the same intuitions I do about the meaning of the word "laced." Why have some in the media implied Tlaib employed more profanity than she did? And would they have made the same implication if she were white and/or male?
