Actually I believe this happens in any/every business. Why? Cause I’m in retail and same happens, working for free. My husband is in CCTV /security same for him. I believe its very common in any business and it’s wrong. At least it’s this way unless your at top exec level

News IS 24/7.. ya go where & whenever the story is & should be fairly compensated.. I'm curious..hasn't reporting changed some though with social media? I see news stations always asking for other people's videos? So that's got to help offset some of their field work, no(?)

-
Advancements in technology haven’t offset the enormous increase in reporters’ workloads. For example, social media can facilitate reporting, but it has also added a whole new layer to what is expected of journalists. Budget cuts, burnout and layoffs don’t help.

I’m sure that being a reporter is kind of like being an artist. Some people just spend a lot more time getting their piece ready for show

I’m on your team, but that’s actually not what he said. Re-read the tweet
-
It’s in the context of a larger dialogue in which an editor stated that exploitation of young workers was normal and that reporters who wish to succeed should expect to work nights and weekends off the clock. “Off the clock” was implied, per the original tweet.

With 36 years of experience and top awards my last reporting newspaper gig for Wick in AZ was 17k when I left in 2013, after winning several more awards. They are hiring now in Safford for the same money and looking beginner or retired for same money for 40 hrs, actual 70hrs.
