A rich trove of fossils and stone tools in a Siberian cave suggests Neanderthals made an extraordinary 3,000-kilometre trek from Europe to colonize central Asia about 60,000 years ago.

Hybrid sterility should theoretically be caused by random failures - but it's not. Fantastic work by Rachelle Kanippayoor and Joshua Alpern!

More great work by : "Learning is thus not only a mechanism of plasticity that allows organisms to respond rapidly to environmental change; we demonstrate that learning ability itself can evolve rapidly in nature."

In almost all past experiments on transgenerational epigenetic responses the inheritance dynamics were examined at the *population* level (averaged). Here’s what happens when you look deeper and analyze small RNA inheritance in many lineages using >20,000 individual worms 👇👇👇

Really nice work by : "these patterns suggest the rapid evolution of parent-of-origin-specific resource allocation alleles coincident with [hybrid seed inviability] within and between [Mimulus] guttatus and M. decorus."

ALWAYS ask the current students (one-on-one) who work in your potential mentor's lab about their experience. Is the PI available? Supportive? What is mentoring style? How did they develop their dissertation projects? If multiple students give same red flag, take it seriously. 8/8

DON'T ask about compensation in the interview. You can ask after you're accepted. 7/8

If a conversation is awkward or stunted, or you just really need a breather, politely ask to go to the restroom. No one will question it (or compare notes to know you did that in the last meeting), and it'll give you a minute or two to recover. 6/8

#4 Enthusiasm about science. You may be tired (interviews can be exhausting), but you should seem like you get at least a little endorphin rush from talking about your science or hearing about others'. Use coffee or sugar if you need to. 5/8

#3 Be conversational. Ask questions and don't just briefly answer what I ask. Show interest in learning about the research done by the people you're meeting with, even if not your intended mentor. You DON'T need to have read their papers in advance if not an intended mentor. 4/8
