This is also how I see this - and would be very curious to know other viewpoints - is this a distinction only a few share?

🤔 from personal experience, I would be concerned about control/management of the term "mydata" – whether you want the org to lead on managing what the term means, or is it a phrase others should freely use without the org trying to have any say

I fully agree with you @madprime -- how would that reflect to the naming quoestion?

Maybe related if deliberately trying not to "own" the concept. Also reflecting: Oxfam Intl = trying to connect 20 independent orgs. IMO I think unification is powerful, people are stronger together – implying brand management & centralization.

maybe a name is slightly related to how you imagine how centralized governance is – "international" might imply a looser coalition of national teams than a "foundation"? (Why did Open Knowledge go that direction?) I'm used to foundation, Wikimedia, EFF, FSF – maybe a US thing :)

Hey @_karin_c @rufuspollock @sandervdwaal - we're discussing MyData global org naming - care to share thoughts? We're wondering about your Foundation -> International shift...

Oh ours I think is unhelpfully simple. We aren't a foundation, so drop that. There exist lot of other OKs. So international just to distinguish that we aren't one of the national ones.

Hmmm. I think ilInternatnal seems a jump w/o non-international orgs, and even then... e.g. TI is still TI with a chapter structure. And foundtn basically implies funder endowment (unfortunately we don't have one!) Suspect key bit is figuring out the bit before foundn or intnl

Re foundation – true but it can also just mean "organization", US has a variety of "public foundations" esp in tech (e.g. Wikimedia Foundation). They seem to have the "MyData" bit settled! :) Could just go with that, I agree.

I think My data probably does the trick. 😊 As for wiki https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_(nonprofit) …
