      1. Respectfully but strongly disagree. Plenty of university labs are doing RT-qPCR for #SARSCoV2 🦠 diagnostics.. they have constant access to RNA samples and the requisite metadata. We gotta #FeedTheGrassroots to get results! 🧵https://twitter.com/dmaccannell/status/1351991562842984448 …

Sequencing capacity is often not the rate limiting step. It's usually consistent and timely access to samples and requisite metadata. This is a difficult problem to solve across the entirety of the US healthcare and public health system.

      2. Big problem: so far very few 🇺🇸 Federal Dollars to support #SARSCoV2 genome sequencing. Despite emergence of #B117, I’ve seen ZERO @NIH RFA / NOSI for viral sequencing & only limited (small budget) @CDCgov contract opportunities for same

      3. Case in point: the COVID-19 Fast Grants organization & journalists from @postandcourier @washingtonpost etc have reached out to me after noticing how many viral sequences @LSUHS @LSUHSEVTLab + @MiGScenter have submitted to @GISIAD

      4. Fast Grants (private philanthropy) recently GENEROUSLY awarded us $100,000 to help us continue 🦠 sequencing, because they are concerned about #variants like #b117 #B1351.. meanwhile, CDC & NIH: 🦗.

          5. If USA 🇺🇸 wants to stay on top of genomic surveillance, we need to do better! We can’t depend on private donors to fill the gap. Right now, I still don’t see very much in way of federal support nor any coherent plan to increase viral genome surveillance.

          6. I’m particularly miffed that @CDCgov is directly funding & partnering with FOR PROFIT companies Helix + Illumina to sequence SARSCoV2 instead of offering same terms to academic laboratories.

          9. For profit orgs 💰 will benefit their shareholders 💵 . And c’mon! @Illumina is getting PAID no matter who does the sequencing (unless it’s via @nanopore, 😆)
