the @bennpeifert 's of the world have more than enough mathematical firepower at their disposal ... The main advantages of a broad mathematical background are 1) rigor and 2) deciding what ingredients you want to bring to the table ... a tech PhD does not guarantee good taste

It’s not necessary to do the job maybe, but it seems necessary to get hired to do the job?

i think you're interpreting this more narrowly than the context -- "in order to become a buy-side quant researcher or trader" , this sounds quite open ended and of people who broadly speaking fit into one of those two categories across the industry, probably 10% have PhD's

Also currently considering whether I should do a doctorate. On the one hand, because it is genuinely nice to devote yourself to one thing very intensively, but also because I have the impression that many quants did. Thanks for your input.

PhD is a long road full of suffering :) the reason to do it is that you really like the idea of a long road of intensive research

I spent a good year hiding from my advisor when I wasn't making any research progress ... Not the best strategy, in hindsight.

Is the effort worth it though? I've toyed with the PhD idea, but I've also watched friends and family members obtain theirs with very mixed results.

I don’t have a PhD, but I wouldn’t call myself a buy-side quant researcher or trader either. In speaking with our hiring managers, the reason they like PhDs is because they have a demonstrated tolerance for suffering, agonizing self-doubt and uncertainty under pressure.

But I’ve also heard that the people who do the most profitable research are those _without_ PhDs (the minority here). So I don’t know what to make of that except maybe the whole pipeline is broken. @AgustinLebron3 probably has some insight lol.

Could be a selection effect. To get hired without a PhD you need to be genuinely really good. Having a PhD let’s some mediocre people get a pass in the interview process.

This seems spot-on, but I found the road to becoming “genuinely really good” was shorter than the PhD. At the end of the day, it’s an industry built on proof statements. If you want to do a job, learn to do that job better than the people who already have it.
