Friends - I have a friend (not me) who is considering grad school in order to become a buy-side quant researcher or trader. GPA is so/so, applied math. He's thinking b/w data science, applied mathematics, and quant finance masters programs. Which would be most competitive?

So a program I love for consistently great candidates is Carnegie Mellon’s financial engineering program. Very solid.

Yeah, but you have to live in Pittsburgh. Asymmetric downside.

They actually have an NYC program as well (though, it’s mostly remote learning)https://www.cmu.edu/mscf/student-experience/nyc-location.html …

These programs are good, but who hires buy side quant researchers with only masters? 95% of those that I know are physics, engineering or comp sci PhDs?

I find this interesting. We’ve been discussing the merits of M vs PhD hires. Crudely: M more green, but come hungry to learn. With PhD’s you’ve got to filter out those who come expecting mainly to apply what they’ve already learned. PhD’s performance generally more bimodal.

Something I always make sure to impress on candidates applying with PhDs -- we are doing trading research (not ML/statistics/optimization etc) and we use whatever tools are best suited to that. People who just want to apply their niche technique are never going to work out.

Probably one reason why physicists we're so success in the early years: they bring their knowledge to bear to solve specific problems. With caveat that there was low hanging fruit then.
