I do think that investors owning single stocks is generally a bad idea though. Stick to sector/thematic ETFs most of the time, only exceptions are mega caps that are so huge they are effectively an entire sector unto themselves.

with appropriate sizing, there’s no problem holding smid cap single names as a retail investor many just don’t know how to size their bets tho unfortunately

Yeah it’s not that owning smidcaps is intrinsically bad. It’s that the way it’s done by the majority of retail investors is bad.
