It's tough. You're at/near the top of your class at high school. Then again undergrad. Maybe you do a name brand PhD, but the funnel keeps narrowing. Maybe even a name brand postdoc. But eventually you realize your only chance at tenure is the middle of nowhere. You're capped out

But it also gives you appreciation for how intelligent the teachers/profs are at almost all schools, even the non name brand ones. You can get an education from someone very very smart anywhere. That's nice to think about.
