It does feel to me like the culture wars are a reflection of a new type of virtual sovereign state being forged along cultural value grounds. These fledgling states haven’t yet figured out the power and importance of diplomacy, however, hence all the chaos and polarisation.
They also don’t have nukes or armies, so the consequences of not having diplomacy is somewhat milder. It’s mostly people getting mad at each other online.
I think one gets a skewed view of how polarised things are by viewing the arguments through twitter and newspaper opinion columns and comment sections. Almost no one I know offline is anywhere near as polarised as the median twitter commenter.
