My girlfriend is a doctor and like half of my friends are doctors. Their near-unanimous view is that the NHS is dying, not because of COVID, but because of a decade plus of underinvestment by governments who just do not give a shit.https://twitter.com/dsquareddigest/status/1450780468723523588 …

Possibly true, but I worry that you have to start by respecting the problem, and that means being honest that the cause of the NHS crisis at present is not that COVID outcomes have been worse than expected (they've been a lot better than forecasts). It's underinvestment. https://twitter.com/HugoGye/status/1450583007182602245 …

Anecdotal experience of going to an NHS doctor after going to private doctors for years: it sucked (a lot). On the plus side, I didn't died.

Practically every private consultant in the UK is an NHS one as well, they are literally the same people (apart from certain specialities where there is no private market). What's different is number of nurses, midwives and overall resources and support.

Also remember that private doctors in the UK generally don't deal with expensive, complicated, life-threatening conditions (cancer, heart disease etc). The NHS handles all of that. Private doctors focus on low-risk high-return stuff (dermatology, fertility, lasik etc)

Your experience with an NHS dermatologist will probably suck because the actual treatment part is easy and cheap and they want to get you out of the way as soon as possible. When you go to a private dermatologist you are mainly paying for them to treat you nicely.

Given my complicated IVF route, I had my bloods taken MANY times. Multiple private and NHS places. Most struggle with my veins, and often I get 2-5 attempts. The two best phlebotomists were: a pediatric one at Portland hospital and just normal UCLH one at a local health centre.

Once you’ve take three hundred samples from tiny newborns, taking bloods from an adult is playing on easy mode.
