I find the entire stereotype strange, THAC0 is not particularly complicated. The advantage of it is you don't have to add static modifiers to every roll you make. The disadvantage is you need to know the AC of something you're attacking to make the calculation
Same reason that finance articles always include "bond yields move inversely to prices" when discussing fixed income. People find the idea that lower = better hard.

You might be right. I think there's a certain elegance to the mechanic though, having a target on your sheet rather than adding fixed bonuses every time. Maybe it's a branding issue and if it were just called "Hit Target" it would be better received
