The biggest lesson I had from my time in hedge funds was that a 23yo with zero knowledge of finance can start managing a book and, surprisingly often, lose a fuckload of money.

Ive often thought about this (in terms of if I had 1 million dollars, how would I invest it?) Ironically, its completely different then what I am doing now. Alot of the money I have lost has been in trying to make dollars out of pennies. The rest was "this time it will be diff"

Why do they hire people without the knowledge needed and then don't train them adequately? Seems like they're expected to lose money for the portfolio they're given to manage.
