In a heat with 2 competitors from each country, your Europe team has 20 competitors and the US has two. This makes no sense.

Most Olympic medals are in oddball sports that few people play, therefore population is less of a factor than it seems.
I mean the USA is famous for literally inventing new sports and calling the top national competition "the world series" so this is a weird counterpoint.
