It's nothing to do with money - GDP per capita of these countries is about 2/3 that of the USA, and that's with Ireland inflating the statistics with its low corporate tax rate.

Most Olympic medals are in oddball sports that few people play, therefore population is less of a factor than it seems.

I mean the USA is famous for literally inventing new sports and calling the top national competition "the world series" so this is a weird counterpoint.

There's a lot of cope from American in the comments, pointing out the combined European team has more athletes. If you think medals per athlete is a better comparison, by that measure China dominates the US with 0.09 vs 0.06 golds/athlete and 0.22 vs 0.18 total medals/athlete.
