At least to me, the wording in the question seems to imply "I was [considered] the gifted kid", so more of an external perception than a self-assessment.

I was very gifted in kindergarten because as long as you don't stick your finger up your nose you are automatically in the top 1% of students. Now no one gives me validation every 5 minutes so I underachieve ;-;
