What book would you recommend to a smart 16 year old who wants to learn more about the stock market so they can trade better? I know “just buy index funds” which will obviously be my main advice, but humor me.

Something by Michael Lewis like Boomerang. Adds a bit of context to investing, I.e. these are business and countries, with real people.
-
Bit of an old harp to be playing, but education on investments and managing money, for young people, is severely lacking.

Level of math proficiency is a big variable here. reminiscences of a stock operator, hull, metal men, etc. Aside from math actual sectors/etc of interest are important. If it's trading options he wants to do he should read some specific things on that.

I'm pretty sure there's a negative correlation between math ability and returns among retail investors

I honestly think Random Walk is still a stone-cold one-stop classic intro to for people interested in learning about markets.

Suitable for sixteen year olds?

Not stock market only but I think Expected Returns by Antti Ilmanen is about as good an overview of the fundamental drivers of most major asset classes as exists (I realise caring about fundamentals makes me sound old). The equities content is great.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Expected-Returns-Investors-Harvesting-Rewards/dp/1119990726/ref=nodl_ …
